Ms. Donna McGowan, Country Director, British Council Vietnam, said that in the last three years, the British Council Vietnam has cooperated with the European Union and the Vietnam National Institute of Culture and Arts Studies (VICAS) to design and implement the Vietnam Cultural and Creative Space project. This project not only connects the community of artists, creators and audiences across Vietnam with several creative cultural spaces in Europe to celebrate freedom of artistic expression and cultural diversity, but also helps build the strength and intrinsic value of the cultural and creative sectors in Vietnam.

A lot of changes have been made from the Vietnam Cultural and Creative Space project. Cultural and creative space is a place, be it physical or online, that brings people together, it is a space to express their artistic ideas and creativity in a free and open environment, and allowing them to share different works of art with their community. In Vietnam, most spaces are independent art spaces, design studios or production spaces, and are often led and managed by artists and creative practitioners. “In 2018, the presence of about 140 spaces in Vietnam was recorded in our first creative and cultural hub mapping study. After three years of implementing this project, we are proud to have partnered with more than 300 spaces not only in major urban areas such as Hanoi, Da Nang or Ho Chi Minh City but also in the places we seek new connections such as Hai Phong, Dak Lak, Da Lat, Gia Lai and Tien Giang. We really feel that these spaces are creating positive changes,” said Ms. Donna McGowan.

According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Hoai Son – Director of the Vietnam National Institute of Culture and Arts Studies, the Vietnam Cultural and Creative Space project has supported capacity building in practice and business in the fields of culture and art and creativity through training, coaching and professional support activities. At the same time, the project has also supported the establishment of an official network of active cultural and creative hubs across Vietnam, the Viet Nam Creative Hubs Initiative (vichi) to connect many spaces. Vietnamese creative culture in a more sustainable ecosystem. In particular, the project has also initially connected Vietnam’s cultural and creative spaces with state agencies and offices to facilitate understanding, awareness and sharing of connections between the two countries. These two regions together, actively contribute to promoting the implementation of the Strategy for the development of Vietnam’s cultural industries to 2020, with a vision to 2030.

In 3 years from 2018 to 2021, the Vietnam Cultural and Creative Space project implements a series of activities to support creative cultural spaces – places that play a supporting and connecting role between artists, practitioners and the public in the cultural, artistic and creative fields.

Culture is one of the factors promoting sustainable development because it creates cohesion between communities to move towards an open society and equitable development in the future. Approaches using artistic and cultural elements facilitate different groups of people to interact, exchange, find creative problem solving, and also enhance the capacity of side. Culture also offers opportunities for creative expression to the voices of individuals to increase understanding, empathy, and create positive change.
