In childhood, every Vietnamese has been experienced in the interesting and useful folk games. Folk games are an important legacy in Vietnam’s cultural treasures. These are community-based creations, full of historical values, spiritual culture and physical training skills and flexibility. The games originate from working and production of human, which are of scientific value and passed down through generations and regions with many variations to suit the natural and social context.
The games’ rules were changed slightly by the Organizing Committee to make them attractive but still retain the core values
However, in modern urban life, folk games are eroded. The good values of Vietnamese folk games are gradually lost and forgotten. With the desire to make traditional cultural values return to contemporary life and bring the new breath to old values and help the folk culture to be in harmony with the urban environment. UNESCO Center for International Cultural Preservation and Exchange in coordination with the San Dinh Project Team in research, development and implementation of the project “Vietnamese Folk Game Day”, contributing to conservation and promotion of values of the treasure of “Vietnamese folk games”.
The final of Vietnamese Folk Games Olympics will take place on September 15 with the participation of four winning teams in the qualifying rounds in the previous weeks.
The Vietnamese Folk Games Olympics were first held in Hanoi in 2018, with the mission of preserving Vietnamese games, bringing new vitality to ethnic games and helping develop old values to adapt and develop in modern life. The project aims to create the annual festival of Vietnamese folk games on August 18. This Scheme has been successfully defended and endorsed by the Vietnam Federation of UNESCO Associations.
Mr Nguyen Xuan Thiet – Deputy General Secretary, Office of Vietnam Federation of UNESCO Associations awarded Certificate of Vietnamese Folk Game Day of August 18.
Ms Nguyen Thanh Nga – Head of the Organizing Committee of the Vietnam folk games festival said: “The vision in the next 2 years is to focus on folk games, bring folk games back to families, schools and community spaces, make folk games a popular form of entertainment and education. Currently, from now until the final day of the Vietnamese Folk Games Olympics on September 15, every Saturday evening, we will organize folk games in the walking street Trinh Cong Son for people to experience together”.
