The 2018 Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championship took place in Uzbekistan from April 24 and was also the 2018 Youth Olympics Qualifiers. On the first day of the competition, the Vietnamese youth weightlifting team won 5 gold medals.
In the Youth men category 50kg, weightlifter Do Tu Tung (born in 2004) won all three gold medals with a 92kg Snatch and a 128kg Clean & Jerk and 220kg in total lift. Accordingly, he broke the new world record under the age of 17 with a 128kg Clean & Jerk.
With 128kg in the Clean & Jerk, Do Tung broke a world youth record (U17) set by Thai lifter Chomchuen Teerapat in the 2017 Youth Weightlifting Championship by lifting 127kg.
This record was gained by Tu Tung’s break-through act when he was sure to get the third gold medal after the first clean & jerk. With 220kg in total lift, Tu Tung’s total lift was 32kg than that of the second, Tukmenistan athlete.
After Thach Kim Tuan, Do Tu Tung is the next lifter in Vietnam to set a new world record.
At the junior’s age (U20), weightlifter Thach Kim Tuan is holding two world youth records in 135kg snatch and 296kg total lift at the 2014 Youth Weightlifting Championship.
On the first day of competition, lifter Pham Dinh Thi also brought gold medal to Vietnam in junior women’s 48kg class. In this category, Thi won the 69kg snatch lift (ranked second after the athletes of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) and 92kg clean and jerk lift (ranked first), and achieved 161kg total lift (ranked first), accordingly, won 2 gold medals and a silver medal.
In the junior women’s 44kg, Nguyen Thi Thu Trang snapped up three silver medals to Vietnam. In this tournament, Vietnamese weightlifters strive to be in the top four delegations to gain at least one man to officially attend the Youth Olympics.
