The 2020 Asian Junior Weightlifting Championships took place in Uzbekistan from February 13 to 19, 2020. Despite the absence of China, the championship still engaged representatives from Taipei (China) and other 19 countries and territories with a total number of male and female athletes of 197. At the championship, the athletes competed at 24 events.
Do Tu Tung won 6 gold medals in the 2020 Asian Junior Weightlifting Championships in Uzbekistan
As the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic occurred in many parts of the world, the Vietnamese junior weightlifting team with 9 members had fully taken preventive measures before traveling to Uzbekistan.
By the end of the 3rd day of the championship (February 16), the Vietnamese weightlifting team won a total of 13 gold medals; of which, Nguyen Thi Thuy Tien won 3 gold medals at the women’s event for those under 49 kg with a snatch, clean & jerk, and a total record of 79 kg, 105 kg, and 184 kg, respectively; the remaining 4 gold medals were won by Nguyen Thi Thu Hoai at the women’s event for those under 40 kg.
Notably, 16-year-old Do Tu Tung, who had won gold medals in both world and Asian championships, shocked the audience when he won 6 gold medals (3 at junior events, 3 at youth events). Achievements that the young talent from Bac Ninh obtained at the men’s event for those under 55 kg were 110 kg (snatch), 136 (clean & jerk), and 246 (total). The young Vietnamese talent is also the holder of the world’s youth record for the snatch lift. Teammate Quan Dac Tri also received a silver medal at this event.
The championship is considered an opportunity to accumulate points for the official qualification to the 2020 Olympic Games. However, the competition for medals at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Games will be tough as the powerhouses at these events (China, Indonesia, Korea DPR, etc.) are all formidable.
