The book introduces more than 130 stories of Tutelary Genies. This is the cultural heritage from previous generators since thousands of years, forming the unique cultural identity of Vietnam in general and Thang Long – Hanoi in particular.
“Sự tích các Thành hoàng làng Thăng Long – Hà Nội” consists of 480 pages, based on studies of members of the Hanoi Folk Arts Association on worshipping the Tutelary Genies, the gods worshipped at the communal houses and temples in villages, heroes against foreign invaders, land reclaimers, ancestors, etc. Written with the narrative style and vivid and familiar evidence, the book helps readers understand in-depth Hanoi land and Hanoians of thousand-year history, in addition to many interesting findings.
The book is collected and compiled by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Do Thi Hao, Vice Chairman of the Hanoi Folk Arts Association and 50 researchers based on archives combined with collectables, directly in the historical, cultural and architectural relics in Hanoi. The publication of the book has practical meaning, contributing to preserving and promoting the value of cultural heritage in the context that localities still worship the tutelary gods but no longer retain their worship books and know who the Tutelary Genies are, how merit the tutelary gods are, what and why rituals and rules of sacrifice are in the past…
Besides “Sự tích các Thành hoàng làng Thăng Long – Hà Nội”, two books “Các vị thần Thăng Long – Hà Nội (The Gods of Thang Long – Hanoi)” and “Hội làng Thăng Long – Hà Nội (Village Festivals of Thang Long – Hanoi” were compiled and published members of the Hanoi Folk Arts Association on the occasion of the Millennial Anniversary of Hanoi, which is valuable contributions, helping readers and researchers understand and have interesting information about the Hanoi – The Capital of a Thousand Years of Civilization.
