Following its conclusion in Ho Chi Minh City on November 19, the Vietnam Festival of Creativity and Design 2023 will take place in Hanoi from December 1 to 7.
The Vietnam Festival of Creativity & Design (VFCD) is an annual event organized by RMIT University Vietnam, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Vietnam National Institute of Culture and Arts Studies (VICAS), and various creative partners. The event is open to the public for free in Ho Chi Minh City (from November 13-19) and Hanoi (from December 1-7 at the Vietnam Women’s Museum).
Over its five years of existence, the festival has cultivated an open and highly interactive platform for individuals and organizations to keep pace with the latest trends in the creative field.
Amidst the technological storm that is currently sweeping through, bringing with it a new fear of human replacement by machines, even those engaged in creative work requiring emotional depth face the threat of unemployment. In this context, this year’s Vietnam Festival of Creativity & Design has chosen the theme “Intelligence & Technology” to explore the essential role of design at the intersection of technology and humanity, through discussions, workshops, exhibitions, and various activities.
Through the festival’s activities, the Organizing Committee aims to bolster support for the national strategy in developing cultural industries, fostering a close relationship between cultural development and the socio-economic development of the country. Simultaneously, the festival contributes to laying the foundation for establishing a “creative belt” spanning the entire nation by expanding the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in Vietnam.
Professor Julia Gaimster, Head of the Faculty of Communication and Design at RMIT Vietnam, and Head of the Organizing Committee, delivered a speech at the opening ceremony of VFCD 2023 in Ho Chi Minh City. Professor Julia Gaimster noted that Vietnam’s creativity can shine through the use of new technologies to showcase the strength and potential of human intelligence: “We hope that this year’s festival will stimulate curiosity, imagination, and critical thinking about the role of technology and related tools in our future, as well as inspire people to acquire new skills, explore new opportunities, and connect with creative individuals and organizations both nationally and internationally.”

According to the Organizing Committee, since the first industrial revolution in the 19th century, technology and machinery have dominated all aspects of life, fundamentally changing how society operates. Artificial intelligence (AI) can now learn, synthesize information, analyze, and provide answers beyond what it is programmed to do.
Humans create machines and develop them by mimicking themselves. So how can humans advance when machines upgrade? What are the capabilities of advanced machines in the hands of humans?
More than 10 researchers, artists, and artist groups will provide answers to these questions in the form of physical, digital, or interactive works using new technologies (AR, VR, AI) at the “Intelligence & Technology” exhibition.
