To honor Hanoi’s culinary culture and transform gastronomy into an attractive form of cultural tourism, thereby contributing to the development of the Capital’s cultural industries, the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports will organize the Hanoi Food and Culture Festival 2025 from December 19 to 21 at Thong Nhat Park, under the theme “Hanoi – A Culinary Journey Connecting Creativity.”
The Hanoi Food and Culture Festival is an annual event assigned by the municipal People’s Committee to the Department of Culture and Sports, in coordination with relevant agencies. Notably, in 2022, the Hanoi Party Committee issued Resolution No. 09-NQ/TU (dated February 22, 2022) on developing cultural industries in the Capital for the 2021-2025 period, with orientations toward 2030 and a vision to 2045. In this resolution, cuisine is identified as one of the key sectors driving the growth of Hanoi’s cultural industries.

Speaking at the press conference for the Hanoi Food and Culture Festival 2025 held on the afternoon of December 16, Ms. Le Thi Anh Mai, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports, noted that since Hanoi expanded its administrative boundaries, integrating the cultural essence of Xu Doai, the city’s culture in general, and its cuisine in particular, has become increasingly rich and diverse. In 2014, the city conducted an inventory of intangible cultural heritage, through which hundreds of culinary heritages were identified and included in the municipal heritage list.
To date, Hanoi has seven culinary heritages inscribed on the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage, including: Hanoi Pho; the craft of making Me Tri green rice flakes (Tu Liem Ward); the craft of scenting lotus tea in Quang An (Tay Ho Ward); the craft of making Phu Thuong sticky rice (Phu Thuong Ward); the craft of making Thanh Tri steamed rice rolls (Vinh Hung Ward); and the knowledge of preparing Bat Trang ceremonial feasts (Bat Trang Commune).

Ms. Le Thi Anh Mai, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports, speaks at the press conference.
“Inscription of intangible cultural heritage on the National List is not only an act of honoring traditional values, but also an effective measure to safeguard, promote, and transform heritage into assets and development resources for cultural industries in a sustainable manner, thereby improving local livelihoods,” Ms. Le Thi Anh Mai emphasized.
The Hanoi Food and Culture Festival 2025 provides an opportunity to introduce signature dishes that shape the Capital’s identity, while creating a space where tradition and creativity intersect, where the quintessence of Hanoi’s culinary culture is celebrated, disseminated, and continues its heritage story in contemporary life.

Overview of the press conference.
At the opening ceremony on the evening of December 19, the Organizing Committee will announce the decision of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to inscribe “The Knowledge of Preparing and Enjoying Cha Ca La Vong (Hanoi City)” on the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. On this occasion, residents and visitors will meet members of the Doan family and hear the six-generation story behind this iconic dish, deeply embedded in the collective memory of Hanoians.
Throughout the festival, a wide range of activities will take place, including: 60 exhibition spaces showcasing Hanoi cuisine and regional specialties; a thematic seminar on “Exchange to Enhance Human Resource Quality – Developing Culinary Culture”; artisan-led workshops and demonstrations; cooking competitions for students; circus performances; hat van and hat xam singing; street performances; traditional–modern fusion arts; photo and book exhibitions; and live demonstrations of culinary heritage such as wrapping banh chung, preparing Bat Trang feasts, scenting West Lake lotus tea, making green rice flakes, cooking Phu Thuong sticky rice, cold snail noodle soup, crafting candied fruits and preserves, and cooking chao se.
With the theme “Hanoi – A Culinary Journey Connecting Creativity,” the Hanoi Food and Culture Festival 2025 is expected to become a culturally rich weekend destination. Through creative connections, the festival will enhance the appeal of culinary heritage, helping cuisine emerge as a key resource driving the development of the Capital’s cultural industries in the new period.
