This is considered an international commemoration day to remember the 16 victims of violence who perished in the 1960 assassination in the Dominican Republic. It is an occasion for individuals and organizations advocating for women’s rights across the globe, regardless of language, skin color, or ethnicity, to launch campaigns that ignite the flame of struggle to eliminate violence against women.

As one of the early countries to join the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, our State has made significant efforts over the years to fulfill national commitments through various measures ensuring gender equality in all areas of social life, achieving many commendable results. One of the crucial measures Vietnam has implemented to fulfill its responsibilities as a member state is the development of policies and the establishment and enforcement of legal provisions to enhance women’s status in all aspects of social life and ensure women’s equal rights compared to men. The introduction of the Gender Equality Law and the revised Law on Domestic Violence Prevention and Control in 2022 are important legal frameworks to protect the rights and interests of family members, especially the elderly, women, and children who are vulnerable to domestic violence.

All officials, public servants, employees, workers, citizens, and communities must understand the basic issues and significance of preventing domestic violence and promoting gender equality within families. Gender equality means that men and women have equal positions and roles, and are provided with conditions and opportunities to develop their potential for community, family development, and equal enjoyment of development achievements. Gender equality encompasses equality in law, opportunities, and the outcomes produced, including equality in making decisions related to oneself, family, and society.

Gender equality in families holds significant importance in all eras, particularly in the current context of modernization and industrialization. It creates a healthy environment where people, especially children, are treated equally, educated on equality rights, and act equally. It is a crucial premise for success in childcare, nurturing, and education, contributing to improving the quality of family life, enhancing the country’s economic growth, liberating women, and building sustainable family institutions.

In response to “International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25, 2024,” and “The Action Month for Gender Equality and Prevention of Gender-Based Violence in 2024,” with the theme “Ensuring Social Welfare, Empowering, and Creating Opportunities for Women and Girls to Achieve Gender Equality and Eliminate Gender-Based Violence,” the following main activities will be organized:

Launch ceremonies, rallies, artistic performances, and more; organizing activities to respond to the Action Month in suitable and effective forms, increasing propaganda on the theme, messages, and activities of the Action Month through various media formats, etc.

Forums, dialogues, discussions, cultural exchanges, sports events, training sessions related to the 2024 Action Month theme; Propagating policies ensuring social welfare for the general population, women, and children specifically, and the role of empowering women and girls in promoting gender equality; Organizing competitions on gender equality and gender-based violence themes…;

Supporting victims, women, and children in difficult circumstances; recognizing outstanding groups and individuals in gender equality, preventing, and responding to violence against women and children, and in the implementation of the 2024 Action Month.

Promoting digitalization in communication through social networks to reach more people, especially youth, students, to spread the message of gender equality and preventing gender-based violence, empowering women and girls more broadly.

Enhancing the mobilization of resources to implement the Action Month, strengthening inspection activities on gender equality and women’s advancement at agencies, units, and localities during the Action Month. Strictly handling violations of gender equality, gender-based violence, and in implementing social welfare support policies.

In response to “International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25, 2024,” and “The Action Month for Gender Equality and Domestic Violence Prevention on Gender Basis in 2024,” every individual, family, and society should voice against domestic violence, eradicate gender inequality, enhance awareness, and strictly adhere to laws on domestic violence prevention and gender equality to build a community that is “safe, equal, free from violence, and protects women and children”.
