According to Mr. To Van Dong, Director of Department of Culture and Sports, the city currently has 5,922 relic sites which together hold a special place in the Vietnamese relic system. Such relic sites are historical sites, architectural sites, archaeological sites, ancient villages, and old streets. Hanoi also has 12 categories with 149 national treasures of unique and significant value of history and art.

The city is home to the largest number of iconic museums in the country, preserving and introducing thousands of valuable collections of Vietnamese culture and art as well as collections about the glorious history of building and defending the country and about President Ho Chi Minh. In terms of heritages, Hanoi has a large number of famous landscapes, natural heritages, traditional craft villages, and many intangible cultural heritages of significant value, especially local traditional festivals.

Mr. Hoang Trung Hai, Municipal Party Secretary of Hanoi, in his speech at the meeting

At the meeting, scientists, officers, and staff who directly supervised and protected the relic sites were excited upon learning that the conservation and promotion of the cultural heritages of Thang Long – Hanoi had been of great concern of the city’s leadership members as shown in a number of guidelines, policies, and methods of implementation that fitted the situation. Many delegates also suggested that the city pay more attention to the management of the relic sites and mobilize the participation of the whole community.
After thanking the delegates for giving their constructive comments, Party Secretary Hoang Trung Hai affirmed the consistent viewpoint of the Party, the State, and the city on the conservation and promotion of the value of the cultural heritages. He emphasized that as the locality with the largest number of cultural heritages in the country, the city was of the opinion that better publication of information should be implemented so that the people of the capital in general and the people in the relic sites in particular would be more aware of their responsibility to preserve and promote the cultural heritages of Thang Long – Hanoi. In order to strictly implement the Law on Cultural Heritages and international conventions, each level of government must prioritize and establish special mechanisms for embellishing, preserving, and upgrading local heritages, and strictly handle trespassing acts at landscapes and heritage spaces.
