In 2024, the exhibition adopts the theme “Fragrance and Colors of Thang Long” to celebrate the unique cultural essence of Thang Long – Hanoi and its timeless heritage, expressed through the art of calligraphy. The featured works are inspired by enduring literary masterpieces about Thang Long – Hanoi and the wisdom of historical scholars such as Le Thanh Tong, Chu Van An, Nguyen Trai, Truong Han Sieu, Nguyen Du, Ngo Thi Nham, Tran Ba Lam, and Ba Huyen Thanh Quan.

From hundreds of submissions, the exhibition showcases 36 outstanding works by 18 calligraphers from across Vietnam’s northern, central, and southern regions, including two young female artists. The majority of the pieces are crafted in traditional calligraphic styles such as Seal Script (Trien), Clerical Script (Le), Regular Script (Chan), Semi-cursive Script (Hanh), and Cursive Script (Thao). A few works present bold and innovative interpretations in stroke expression and composition.

The display captures the attention of visitors.

In addition to the calligraphic exhibits, a section of the exhibition is dedicated to installation art featuring 365 ancient-style notebooks inscribed with excerpts from “Khuyen hoc van” (Essay on Encouraging Learning) by King Le Thanh Tong, a prominent figure in medieval Vietnamese literature. This installation serves as a daily reminder of the value of lifelong learning as taught by the great minds of the past.

The exhibition has drawn a significant number of calligraphy enthusiasts.

Curator Xuan Nhu Vu Thanh Tung shared: “This year’s display primarily features works in classical and traditional styles, marked by mastery of technique, fluid brushstrokes, lively ink forms, and balanced compositions. These pieces reflect the maturity of each artist, as they continue to develop their distinct writing styles and creative approaches. Some experimental works with novel presentations reveal the rich diversity and untapped potential of calligraphy in the modern era, despite traditional calligraphy’s continued emphasis on precision, moderation, elegance, and discipline. The enduring principles of classical calligraphy remain the backbone and lifeblood of this art form for those dedicated to mastering it. Innovative approaches and new directions offer fresh discoveries and enrich our understanding of calligraphy. This guiding philosophy serves as a red thread for those wishing to study, research, and advance in the art of brush and ink.”
