Thap Tam Trai is the folk name for the western area of the ancient Thang Long Citadel. This area is essentially equivalent to the Noi area, Vinh Thuan district, now part of Ba Dinh district.
Thap Tam Trai consists of 14 old villages: Thu Le, Van Phuc, Hao Nam, Kim Ma, Ngoc Khanh, Lieu Giai, Cong Vi, Cong Yen, Vinh Phuc, Xuan Bieu, Ngoc Ha, Huu Tiep, Dai Yen, Giang Vo.
The district organized the festival to commemorate the heroic figure Nguyen Quy Cong (Hoang Phuc Trung), also known as Hoang Le Mat, a royal mandarin of the Ly dynasty from the village of Le Mat (now part of Viet Hung Ward, Long Bien district). He significantly opened up the uncultivated land to the west of the Thang Long Citadel, establishing 13 villages and creating a prosperous agricultural area with the name Thap Tam Trai. This year’s festival featured various activities such as drum performances, Thap Tam Trai historical episodes, dragon dances, and notably the procession ritual of Thap Tam Trai.
The festival aims to preserve, promote, and spread beautiful values, honoring the cultural values of the nation, remembering and expressing gratitude for the contributions of Mr. Nguyen Quy Cong, and the historical significance of Thap Tam Trai. Simultaneously, it meets the cultural and spiritual enjoyment needs of the people, elevating the moral principle of “remembering one’s roots,” and serves as an occasion for the residents of the 13 villages to recall the challenging history of building their villages by the predecessors.
The festival is also a place for exchange, and convergence, demonstrating the cultural beauty of the people of Ba Dinh, thereby creating a strong unity, and arousing pride in the heroic historical tradition of the nation.
