Summer is the time that kids are off school. The question of how to help them play safely, be protected and prevented from heart-breaking incidents, especially drowning, is often of great concerns. Being a place having many ponds and lakes, through ways of doing in a scientific and methodological manner, the Thanh Tri district has accomplished lots of achievements in terms of swimming generalization and become one of the flagships in this work of the city.
Identifying the importance of abolishing the “swimming illiteracy” for children in order to improve health and enhance ability of protecting them from drowning, in 2010, the Thanh Tri district has designed a “Scheme of pool- building in protection and prevention of drowning and swimming generalization among primary and basic secondary schools pupils of the Thanh Tri district for the phase of 2010-2015”.

To implement the Scheme, the district has placed much emphasis on constructing swimming pools at communes, towns and schools on the site. At present, in the entire district, there are 14 swimming pools for training at 8 primary schools and 6 basic secondary schools in 12 communes and towns. The swimming pools are disgned with a lean-to, enabling teachers and pupils in the teaching and learning process. swimming coach is the physical teacher who has been trained and gained expertise support from the specialists of the district physical and sports centre. Together with the above swimming pools built, at the district physical and sports centre, there are a four season 8-lane swimming pool of national standard which meets the demand of local people who wish to learn and be trained swimming.
Equipped with the rather comprehensive physical facilities, the Thanh Tri district has done very well intensive and extensive propaganda work ranging from the primary and basic secondary schools down to the local community areas, so that everyone in the district may understand the effects of swimming learning for the health care, especially in the protection and prevention of drowning risks among their children. As the results, they will be concerned and facilitate the kids to participate in swimming class. Thanks to that, the number of swimming learners at the pools become ever bigger. The schools with swimming pools have taken seriously in organizing and directing swimming classes in accordance with the curriculum and guidance regulated by the Ministry of Training and Education. The schools have strictly observed the rules of collecting 200 thousand dong per pupil, just sufficient to cover for swimming fee and cleaning of the pool. Ever since the execution of the Scheme, all the schools on the district area have managed to issue cirtificates of swimming to 12,284 pupils. The distric physical and sports centre has also made positive contribution to the annual holding of swimming classes. In 2015, the centre has opened 8 swimming generalization classes, resuting in more than 500 course finishers.
With a view to attracting as many as possible children to the swimming pools, making a eager for swimming movement sustainable, the Thanh Tri district has been quite proactive in ensuring the safety in swimming teaching and learning, with no accident incurring. The total trainees of each swimming class is fixed about 20 kids, making sure the coaching quality is fine. Pool water is treated by the modern circulating filtering system, without causing allergy and skin deseases harmful to kids’ health.
According to the surveys, currently on the district area, there are remaining over 2,700 pupils of primary and basic secondary schools not knowing to swim. Although the Scheme has completed, given a number of drowned cases most recently happened in several provinces nation-wide when the summer comes as well as facts have showed the great impacts of swimming in aspects of protecting children from drowning, in 2016, the Thanh Tri district will continue to popularize swimming among kid in ages, helping bring them with safe and interesting holidays.
