The musical “Chi Pheo’s Dream” is inspired by the literary work “Chi Pheo” by writer Nam Cao. Completed and premiered in December 2024, it created a significant impact on both audiences and critics. At the 2024 National Music, Dance, and Song Festival, the musical “Chi Pheo’s Dream” won 8 individual and collective awards, including Best Performance and Best Composer for musician Duong Cam.
“Chi Pheo’s Dream” is considered Vietnam’s first internationally-standard Broadway musical, produced entirely by Vietnamese artists, including scriptwriter Dinh Tien Dung, stage director NSUT Phung Tien Minh, music director Duong Cam, and artistic director people’s artist Huynh Tan Minh. True to its name, “Chi Pheo’s Dream” delves deeply into the romantic story of Chi Pheo and Thi No, using music, choreography, and theatrical performance to retell a familiar story in a fresh, engaging, and captivating way. In this musical, music is regarded as the soul of the work – carefully nurtured by Duong Cam and the entire creative team over many years to turn the idea into reality.
Following its “grand victory” at the 2024 National Music, Dance, and Song Festival, “Chi Pheo’s Dream” had sold-out performances in December 2024 and March 2025. Notably, the musical has received highly positive feedback from audiences, and after each show, clips of the performance posted on social media have attracted widespread attention. Importantly, for each performance run, the production has been upgraded in all aspects, including sound, lighting, modern stage design, and actors’ performances, to provide viewers with a fresh and immersive experience.
It is reported that for the two upcoming performances on the evenings of June 6 and 7, many ticket categories for the musical “Chi Pheo’s Dream” have already sold out. This demonstrates the work’s strong appeal and suggests that these performances will continue to be successful, helping to bring musical theater closer to a broad audience in Hanoi.
