Building a Sustainable and Professional Sports System
This is one of the general goals outlined in the Strategy for the Development of Fitness and Sports in Vietnam until 2030, with a vision to 2045. Along with this, the Strategy aims to ensure that all people have access to and benefit from fitness and sports services, exercising regularly to improve health, physical fitness, and quality of life. It also seeks to enhance the performance of Vietnamese sports, gradually narrowing the gap and moving towards parity with countries that have developed sports systems in Asia. The Strategy further aims to expand the sports market, mobilize and effectively use resources for the development of fitness and sports.
According to the Strategy, the fitness and sports movement for all people will develop widely, with the number of people regularly practicing fitness and sports reaching more than 45% of the population; over 90% of students, university students, and military personnel meeting physical training standards; and almost all local administrative units, including rural areas and neighborhoods, will have community-based sports clubs.
By 2045, the fitness and sports movement will develop evenly and diversely across different groups and regions. There will be a regular physical training habit among the people, with more than 95% of students, university students, and military personnel meeting the physical fitness standards. The physical stature of Vietnamese youth will be among the highest in the region.
For high-performance sports, the strategy aims to maintain top 3 positions in SEA Games and top 20 in the Asian Games (ASIAD); with a goal of winning 5 to 7 gold medals in ASIAD, securing medals in the Olympics and Paralympics, and positioning men’s football in the top 10 in Asia and women’s football in the top 8 in Asia. By 2045, high-performance sports will consistently maintain top 2 in SEA Games, top 15 in ASIAD, and top 50 in the Olympics; with men’s football in the top 8 in Asia and qualifying for the World Cup, and women’s football in the top 6 in Asia with World Cup qualification.
The national sports infrastructure network will be modern, capable of hosting the Asian Games (ASIAD). At least 50% of provinces and centrally-run cities will have 3 basic sports facilities meeting international competition standards. 100% of districts will have 3 basic sports facilities that meet regulatory standards, and 100% of communes will have sports infrastructure. All schools in the national education system will have sports facilities.
Hanoi is one of the localities where the movement of fitness and sports is widespread among the population.
The sports economy has experienced significant growth, with a strong increase in the number and scale of fitness and sports production and business facilities from 2025 to 2030, as well as diverse development in types of fitness and sports services. The sports market is expanding, and the sports economy is achieving high annual growth rates, gradually making a positive contribution to the country’s economic development.
