With the theme \u201cPractical Learning \u2013 Self-liberation with the help of books\u201d, the 2018 Spring Book Fair provided readers with nearly 40,000 books in all fields with an aim to bring readers great things in their journey of self-liberation to become a person of Knowledge, Freedom, and Happiness.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been over 100 years since the beginning of the 20th<\/sup> century when predecessors such as Phan Boi Chau, Phan Chau Trinh, Luong Van Can, Nguyen Truong To, Lady Dam Phuong, and many others called for and practiced practical learning and skill enhancement in Vietnam. Even today, Vietnam\u2019s education and its people still need to be \u201cliberated\u201d in order to achieve the true value of \u201cpractical learning and skill enhancement\u201d to form people of Freedom, Happiness, and Self-acknowledgement and to build a civilized society.<\/p>\n

In her speech at the opening ceremony of the book fair, Mrs. Khuc Thi Hoa Phuong, Director of Women\u2019s Publishing House, affirmed: \u201cWith the help of books, we believe that our people can liberate and enlighten ourselves to achieve liberation and freedom. With the help of books, we believe that our people can wholeheartedly practice practical learning and skill enhancement, experience happiness, and join hand in building a civilized society.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mrs. Khuc Thi Hoa Phuong, Director of Women\u2019s Publishing House, delivered her speech at the opening ceremony of the book fair.<\/p>\n

At the book fair, readers were offered a chance to travel back to the early twentieth century with the Women\u2019s Series (Gender and Development category) to witness how the predecessors \u201crenovated\u201d to develop new generations. The book \u201cDiem – An elite\u201d was the most complete collection and commentary of the works of Authoress Hong Ha Doan Thi Diem – the pioneer who wrote about women\u2019s rights in the feudal age. The book \u201cLady Dam Phuong – Issue of Women in Our Country\u201d was about a rather different type of women who were members of the royal family, but were very active on several newspapers in the early 20th<\/sup> century to fight for women\u2019s rights to education, feminism, and especially for practical learning and skill enhancement for women as well as the nation\u2019s democracy in the midcentury modern age.<\/p>\n

The young generations were offered a change to acknowledge the prime time of their lives – the age when young people work hard to achieve their dreams and when they \u201cburn\u201d in a journey of self-liberation \u2013 through a series of books of Tre Publishing House, such as \u201c1987 and 1987+\u201d, \u201cThe journey of finding myself\u201d which was about self-study, self-learning, and self-experience, \u201cAge 20 – I lived like a wild flower\u201d, or \u201cCan today only be about happiness?\u201d.<\/p>\n

At the Spring Book Fair, enthusiastic parents also learned the lesson of self-liberation and liberal education in the era of integration through \u201cThis is my Country, that is my mother\u2019s Fatherland\u201d or \u201cTeaching your child more successfully than Mother Tiger\u201d. Through these books, the authors helped parents realize a simple truth: No two children are the same and the proper approach to helping each child grow harmoniously and happily is by the patience and boundless love of parents.<\/p>\n

In a space of book lovers, let\u2019s listen to the shared words of a monk who had been building a pagoda in a remote commune to enrich the spiritual life of not only the commune\u2019s residents, but also the students of the district and college students of Thai Binh Province through a library with 5000 books and beautiful gardens in the temple. \u00a0Anyone can go to the pagoda to read books, watch flowers, spread the goodness, talk with others about self-study to aim at practical learning and liberation. It was monk Thich Nu Quang Phat – the head of Thien Phuc Pagoda (Quynh Phu – Thai Binh), who brought the message: \u201cWhat we know is just a hold of leafs in the hand, what we do not know is the leaves in the forest, so we could only enrich our knowledge through books\u201d.<\/p>\n

Other shared words are those of the elite teacher Duong Le Nga – Head of Thai Binh Good Heart Connection Group \u2013 who had contributed to building thousands of bookcases and dozens of cultural readings across the country. Although retired, she always shows her enthusiasm about setting up Bookcases and Reading Space in many remote provinces all over the country with several-billion funds per year. Her group members are also members of the Sun Fragrance Volunteer Group for Community.<\/p>\n

[Elite teacher Duong Le Nga shared about replacing the hard-hitting flag-salute ceremonies full with commendation and critique with vibrant flag-salute ceremonies where new books and good plays drawn from meaningful stories in books were introduced.<\/p>\n

Such people have inspired the younger generations to enrich their knowledge beyond what they learn at school. Today\u2019s secondary school students can already set up book reading clubs to share knowledge and implement actions for the community. These people are the ones that have reached the true value of self-liberation with the help of books and have now contributed to spreading the love of books to others.<\/p>\n
