On March 27, 1946, President Ho Chi Minh of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam signed Order No. 38 establishing Bureau of the Youth and Sports under the management of Ministry of National Education. On the same day, Cuu Quoc Newspaper, house organ of the Viet Minh Front, published article “Health and physical training” penned by President Ho Chi Minh. In the article, he wrote “Maintaining the democracy, building the nation, or creating new life style all require good health to succeed. Every weak citizen makes a weak nation while every healthy citizen makes a healthy nation. Therefore, exercising and maintaining good health is the duty of every patriotic citizen…” Through 72 years of development, Vietnam’s sports sector has achieved numerous splendid milestones with great contribution from Hanoi’s sportsmen. In 2017, Hanoi Sports Center provided training courses to a total of 2,978 athletes of 33 sports and sub-items in preparation for the participation in 170 domestic and 130 international tournaments, winning a total of 2,520 medals of all kinds. At the 29th SEA Games held in Malaysia, Hanoi’s athletes competed in 22 out of 28 sports competed by the sports team of Vietnam, contributed 50 medals (18 gold medals, 14 silver medals, 18 bronze medals) out of 168 medals obtained by the national team. In addition, at the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games held in Turkmenistan where Vietnam’s sports team with 175 participants competed in 14/21 sports and won 13 gold medals, 8 silver medals, and 19 bronze medals, Hanoi contributed 38 participants (8 coaches and 30 athletes) in 9 sports (weightlifting, athletics, wrestling, Taekwondo, Muay, Kurash, Kickboxing, Jujitsu, Sports Dance) and achieved 3 gold medals, 3 silver medals, and 6 bronze medals.

At the ceremony of the 72nd anniversary of Vietnam Sports Day, Mr. To Van Dong, Director of Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports, recognized and praised the great achievements and contributions of the Center’s officials, trainers, and athletes throughout the years. He emphasized that in 2018, with many big domestic and international sporting events, Hanoi’s sportsmen would have to make more efforts to affirm the leading position of Hanoi at various events, meet the expectations of the city’s leaders and citizens. He also believed that Hanoi as the host of this year’s event would finish at first place at the 2018 All-nation Sports and Physical Training Grand Festival. In addition to the expectations for the 8th All-nation Sport Grand Festival, Hanoi was also expected to contribute at least one gold medal at ASIAD 2018.

In recognition of Hanoi Sports Center’s achievements in 2017, Mr. To Van Dong, Director of Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports, on behalf of the Hanoi People’s Committee awarded the Emulation Flag 2017 to the Center at the ceremony.
