Besides, Hanoi also organized many activities such as: launching the response to the Earth Hour Campaign 2019 on March 9, 2019 at Hanoi University; propagating and mobilizing agencies, organizations, schools, businesses, households and residential areas to participate in organizing activities to respond to the Campaign in such forms as: Volunteer team’s propaganda in community, cycling and race; organizing competitions titlted energy saving and environmental protection; turning off lights and unnecessary electrical equipment for an hour from 20:30 to 21:30 on March 30; fixing posters and leaflets in trade centers, supermarkets, shops, office buildings, schools and public areas …; and propagating the meaning of Earth Hour Campaign through socio-political organizations to wards, commune and residential areas and conduct many activities on the roadsides such as: simultaneously turning off lights, decoration panels and advertisement panels for an hour at the famous places, some public areas and streets of Hanoi City such as Ngoc Son Temple – Turtle Tower – The Huc Bridge and Ly Thai To Flower Garden … Each district/ town selected a public area to turn off the lights …
Earth Hour is an initiative of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to improve community awareness of climate change response and saving energy worldwide. Organized for the first time in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour has attracted 2.2 million participants, through a simple forms of turning off lights and unnecessary electrical appliances for an hour on the last Saturday of March every year and organizing advocacy activities to cope with the climate change impacts during the next time. Earth Hour has received the enthusiastic response of numerous countries around the world.
In 2009, Vietnam participated in Earth Hour Campaign for the first time and Hanoi Capital is one of the leading cities in the country to carry out activities to respond to Earth Hour Campaign. Since 2012, Hanoi City People’s Committee in collaboration with the Ministry of Industry and Trade successfully organized Earth Hour event. This event has made an important contribution to building a beautiful image of Hanoi Capital toward Vietnamese people and international friends.
Earth Hour campaign 2018 of Hanoi City has been widely responded by the Capital people voluntary and self-aware spirit, energy saving and environmental protection for socio-economic development towards green and sustainable growth. Hanoi City’s Earth Hour Campaign 2018 has helped the National Electricity System save 485,000 kWh, equivalent to about 834 million VND for an hour of Earth Hour event.
In 2019, Hanoi City participated in the Earth Hour Campaign with the expectation of receiving the response of all classes of people and business community in many different ways to bring common benefits to the community and improve awareness of climate change response and energy saving.
