Overview of the Scientific Symposium

Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam is a special national historical site and an important tourist destination in Hanoi. Despite attracting millions of visitors every year, this is still not really worthy of its position. Particularly, after suffering from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic for nearly 2 years with many difficulties and challenges, managers review how to organize and carry out activities to promote the application of science and technology to attract more visitors. With the growing popularity of the fourth industrial revolution all over the world. Technology 4.0 is penetrating all aspects of social life, with many wide applications, including heritage preservation and enhancement. Application of the latest scientific and technological achievements in the digital transformation era such as Cloud Computing, Big Data, artificial intelligence – AI, 3D interaction, virtual reality ARVR interactive 360° images is necessary to facilitate the sustainable, scientific and practical management and conservation of cultural heritage.

Introducing to visitors the technology applications used at Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam

Through digitization, storage technology and multimedia reconstruction software, the public will be able to access, exploit and interact without harming the heritage or relic. Digitization has gradually become one of the criteria to assess the cultural tourism development of relics and museums aiming at high-quality cultural products for research and conservation, popularization and promotion of cultural heritage values to all classes of people nationwide and worldwide. Digitization is also in line with the public’s approach and enjoyment of culture in the era of the 4th industrial revolution and associated with the task of building Hanoi as the innovative city and industrial development strategy of the Capital.

Speech of Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports Pham Thi My Hoa at the Symposium

Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports Pham Thi My Hoa, for her part, said that, in the context of the complex developments of the COVID-19 pandemic, Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam in particular, and museums and antiquities, in general, are facing many impacts and challenges. In that context, the Symposium is where views, transformation of methods and approaches to technological solutions as well as new trends are exchanged, shared and updated to help the relic be operated more effectively and suitably. Therefore, it is possible to choose effective and appropriate solutions to renew the operation of the relic for sustainable development in the future.

“Applying the power of digital technology in activities at the relic will be one of the effective solutions in an effort to preserve and strengthen the heritage values of Van Mieu-Quoc Tu Giam historical site”, emphasized Ms. Pham Thi My Hoa.

For preservation, application of technology and relic digitization creates a database that helps to store long-term images and information about the entire relic, ranging from architecture, decoration, stele system etc. to educational and examinational tradition, the traditional fondness for learning or the status and career of the scholars… However, special attention is paid to the application of 4.0 technology for value promotion. IT experts suggested that Technology 4.0 can be used to create AI-based virtual tour assistant system, 3D virtual tours on the Internet, 360 virtual reality tours, and 3D user interaction with the typical relics such as Stelaes of Doctors, among others, giving visitors a new experience of Van Mieu-Quoc Tu Giam. These technologies help visitors learn thoroughly and excitingly about Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam in a “virtual but real” environment; creating attractive 3D virtual tours.

Assoc. Prof., Dr. Dang Van Bai Speech at the Symposium

These technologies are also mastered when the latest technology 4.0 is already applied in Vietnam. Assoc. Prof.,Dr. Dang Van Bai, Member of the National Council for Cultural Heritage, affirmed: “Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam historical site has all the necessary conditions to practice the educational cultural functions as a space for the vivid visual experience; self-study and self-training environment; public communication space. Education about the heritage would be more effective if we know how to use digital technologies. The technologies help create virtual reality products providing visitors cultural opportunities to actively explore what they want to know. To do this, relevant agencies need to actively and creatively develop products using technology 4.0”.

Especially, 3D Mapping technology is now increasingly popular. This technology helps to build a model with the same scale and size as the real product, then using presentation in 3D. This application is also suitable if it is deployed at Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam when opening sightseeing tours and night tours with the orientation of organizing cultural space and walking streets around the relic. On this occasion, Van Mieu–Quoc Tu Giam Culture and Science Centre also conducted a 3D Mapping demonstration at Thai Hoc Courtyard for consultation from experts and scholars.

Mr. Le Xuan Kieu, Director of Van Mieu–Quoc Tu Giam Culture and Science Centre said, the Centre always wants to turn Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam into a space of cultural activities with several cultural products to serve tourists during daily and nightly visits, based on which a walking street around Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam for activities at the weekend will be formed to promote the values of the relic associated with learning obligations. Therefore, the Centre proposed the city authorities develop technology 4.0 based smart tourism in Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam, including the development of night tours telling about learning obligations in Vietnam and Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam using technology to work with Dong Da district to turn the space around the historical site into a walking street for domestic and foreign tourists.
