In 2020, Hanoi City said that about 150 industrial parks located in inner-city districts will have to stop operating or be relocated to peri-urban areas. This decision raises important questions: How are these large centrally located sites in the future? How can they be reused for the development of the city? In the context of rapid urbanization, coupled with the lack of open cultural and community spaces, the project promotes a re-evaluation of the values of Hanoi’s industrial heritage through constructive interventions.

The seminar provides an opportunity for multi-parties dialoguing to exchange experiences and proposals with famous Vietnamese and foreign architects and planners about the potential benefits of “reconstruction of industrial heritage” which reviews the aspect of contributing to a livable Hanoi city with designs suitable to the direction of urbanization development of the Capital as well as fulfilling the goal of sustainable development.

The seminar is an activity within the framework of the EUNIC project “Repurposing Industrial Heritage”. The project was conceived by Institut Français du Vietnam and gathered the participation of the Delegation of the European Union to Vietnam and the participation of the European Union Delegation to Vietnam together with 11 members of the European Union National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC) (Goethe-Institute, British Council, Wallonie-Bruxelles Delegation and the Embassies of Italy, Spain, Hungary, Czech Republic, Romania, Poland, Kingdom of the Netherlands, Sweden); 4 local partners (Hanoi University of Architecture, Network For a Liveable Hanoi, Heritage Space, Vietnam Sustainability Social Enterprise (VSSE); 4 expert partners (UNESCO Vietnam, Hanoi Ad Hoc, PRX Vietnam, Undecided Production). The project is supported by EUNIC’s Spaces of Culture program.
