On the morning of July 4, Vietnam Boxing Federation (General Department of Sports and Physical Training) confirmed that boxer Nguyen Thi Tam was officially eligible to participate in Olympics Tokyo 2020. She will represent Vietnam Boxing Team to compete in the women’s <51 kg weight category.

This is also the first time a female athlete from the Vietnamese boxing team has been eligible to participate in Olympics. After male athlete Nguyen Van Duong, Nguyen Thi Tam is the second Vietnamese boxer who will attend the world’s biggest sports festival that will be held in Japan at the end of July.
Before that, Tam’s opportunity to attend the Olympics was uncertain because the criteria for athlete addition were still being considered after the official representatives of Vietnam were announced.
Nguyen Thi Tam is the No. 1 athlete of the Vietnamese Boxing Team in the women’s 51kg category. She is entitled to take part in Olympics Tokyo 2020 by accumulating 190 points after completing the tournaments organized by the World Boxing Federation. Another reason is that North Korea has just announced its withdrawal from the Olympics, which means that Park Mi Choi, North Korea’s boxer who ranks first in the World Rankings, will not attend the Olympics. Accordingly, Tam’s score of 190 is just enough to dominate over other competitors in the Olympic ranking to be officially entitled to take part in Olympics Tokyo 2020 this summer.

Nguyen Thi Tam has just been vaccinated against COVID-19 and will have a second vaccine soon, before leaving for Tokyo. Coach Nguyen Nhu Cuong will accompany her.
Thus, the Vietnamese sports delegation has 18 attendees, namely: Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy (Judo), Hoang Xuan Vinh (shooting), Thach Kim Tuan, Hoang Thi Duyen, Vuong Thi Huyen (weightlifting), Nguyen Tien Minh, Nguyen Thuy Linh (badminton), Nguyen Huy Hoang, Nguyen Thi Anh Vien (swimming), Nguyen Van Duong, Nguyen Thi Tam (Boxing), Le Thanh Tung, Dinh Phuong Thanh (gymnastics), Truong Thi Kim Tuyen (Taekwondo), Do Thi Anh Nguyet, Nguyen Hoang Phi Vu (archery), Quach Thi Lan (athletics), and Luong Thi Thao/Dinh Thi Hao (Rowing).
On July 18, the Vietnamese sports delegation will set off to attend the Olympics Tokyo 2020, led by Mr. Tran Duc Phan, the Deputy Director of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training. The goal of Vietnamese sports is to win Olympic medals.
