With the theme “Gathering to Shine,”  the closing ceremony of the 31st SEA Games is divided into 3 chapters. Chapter 1: “My Hanoi, Your Love” carries the message “Hanoi capital, a thousand years of civilization” with the song series about Hanoi. Chapter 2: “Gathering” begins with the flag ceremony, parades of 11 countries, 40 sports, referees, and volunteers. Along with that are the most impressive images from the first 12 days of the 31st SEA Games. The highlight of this chapter is the Southeast Asian Sports Federation Flag Transfer to Cambodia, the host country of the 32nd SEA Games. Chapter 3 with the theme “Shining” is built as a gala of music, circus, and sports with the participation of leading young singers from Vietnam.

Speaking at the 31st SEA Games, the Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, Nguyen Van Hung, Head of the Organizing Committee of the 31st SEA Games, stresses: “We have just experienced 17 memorable days with many unforgettable good impressions, from the first competition of the 31st SEA Games, which officially started the competition, to the opening ceremony of solidarity and friendship of the community of 11 countries in Southeast Asia, and when the attractive competition of nearly 5,000 athletes with the spirit of transparent and noble sports is officially closed.” During the 31st Southeast Asian Games, we witnessed the image of a Vietnam that has effectively controlled, prevented, and fought the COVID-19 epidemic, a Vietnam friendly to the audience. The success of the 31st SEA Games is not only reflected in the efforts and efforts of the host country of Vietnam, the enthusiastic support of the countries in the region, the medals, the newly established record, but also the song of honesty and nobility, which is a testament to a well-developed future of regional sports that is gradually approaching the level of the continent and the world.

The Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Van Hung affirmed: the 31st SEA Games became a festival of solidarity and friendship. The theme of the Congress “for a stronger Southeast Asia”was shining and very successful.

Next, The Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Van Hung and the Chairman of People’s Committee of Hanoi City Chu Ngoc Anh congratulated and honored the athletes who achieved outstanding achievements at the 31st SEA Games. They were 2 athletes: Nguyen Thi Oanh (Vietnam) and Joshua Robert Atkinson (Thailand); 2 swimmers were Nguyen Huy Hoang (Vietnam) and Jing Wen Quah (Singapore).

After the summary speech of Minister Nguyen Van Hung, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh gave a speech, declaring the closing of the 31st SEA Games. According to the prime minister, the COVID-19 epidemic forced us to move the 31st Southeast Asian Games from November 2021 to May 2022. However, that made us closer together, more united, with more effort, more determination, and more drastic action to overcome all difficulties and challenges for the noble love of sports to successfully organize the 31st SEA Games.

In his speech, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh stressed that we gathered here to jointly contribute to affirming the vision and mission of ASEAN, which were solidarity, peace, friendship, cooperation, and development. That vision, that mission, surpassed the value of the Southeast Asian Games event. We were all happy and excited when the venues were filled with spectators because of a healthy sports background. The climax was the enthusiasm, the exhaustion of more than 40 thousand supporters’ carefree cheers, clear for the final of men’s football at My Dinh Stadium. As Vietnam’s message in particular and that of Southeast Asian countries in general addresses the world, it was that we had managed the epidemic and that safe life had gradually returned to normal.

According to Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, more than 10,000 athletes, referees and coaches were more than 10,000 stories about the effort and sacrifice to overcome difficulties and challenges to impartial, transparent participation in sports day of the region.

In his speech, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh also praised the organizing committee of SEA Games 31, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, ministries, sectors and localities that contributed to SEA Games 31’s success. At the same time, the image of a “safe, friendly, peaceful, hospitable, integrated and developed Vietnam”, a “stronger Southeast Asia”, a “United Southeast Asia, United in diversity”, a “shining Southeast Asia” has been depicted throughout the 17 Days of the Congress.

At the closing ceremony, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh gave special thanks to all the national sports delegations for jointly creating a great SEA Games 31, success, impression, deposition of human affection, memorable, profound humanity, and a spirit of noble sports competition, healthy competition for the color of the shirt flag without achievement. At the same time, with the Saola symbol and deep imprints, unforgettable and emotional memories will forever be preserved, inspired, motivated, and spread within each of us.

After the announcement of the closing of the 31st SEA Games by Prime Minister Pham Minh, there will be a ceremony to turn off the torch of the Congress and lower the flags of the Southeast Asian Sports Federation and the 31st SEA Games. This was followed by a flag ceremony between representatives of the Southeast Asian Sports Federation and Vietnam and representatives of the Olympic Committee of Cambodia, the host country of the 32nd SEA Games. Along with this is the Cambodian art show celebrating the country with the dance Apsara, a symbol of Khmer culture, soul, and identity.

The next part of the Closing Ceremony was the “Farewell” of the 31st SEA Games host country with a series of Quan Ho Folk Song – UNESCO World Intangible Heritage with the tunes: “Moi trau”, “Gia ban” and “Nguoi oi nguoi o dung ve”. And the medley of the closing ceremony includes the works: Miracle of Vietnam, A Thousand Dreams of Vietnam, Beautiful Vietnam, Vietnam Trips, Hearts of Vietnam, Vietnam in harmony with the five continents. Artists perform with the participation of hundreds of dancers in dance sports, gymnastics and modern dance groups, creating a vibrant atmosphere of sports spirit connecting the world, overcoming challenges of life.

The 31st SEA Games  ended with many memorable moments. This was the SEA Games, with the participation of 11 Southeast Asian sports delegations and a total of about 10,000 athletes, coaches, officials, and referees.

Being organized into 40 subjects with 526 competitions, the 31st SEA Games officially took place from May 12 and ended on May 22, 2022, with the final match of men’s football between U23 Vietnam and  U23 Thailand.

Results: At SEA Games 31, the Organizing Committee awarded 1,759 medals of all kinds, especially, there were 30 SEA Games records set. The Vietnamese sports delegation entered the history of the SEA Games with a record of 205 Gold medals, surpassing the record of 194 Gold medals achieved by the Indonesian sports delegation at the Jakarta SEA Games in 1997; broke the SEA Games record at 17/30 content./.
