Artist Jacob Reymond
Artist Jacob Reymond started drawing very early. Thereafter, he pursued a variety of arts to eventually devote himself to painting and painting at his studio in Vauvenargues, at the foot of Sainte Victoire, France.
His Musical paintings exhibition in Hanoi showcases works of acrylic and grape ink on paper and on canvas, inspired by works of classical music (Jean-Sébastien Bach), contemporary works (Steve Reich, Pascal Dusapin, Wolfgang Rhim, Philippe Hersant) or Jazz works.
Jacob Reymond often pores upon a piece of music, sometimes one performed by different artists, decoding it according to his own understanding and reproducing it with lines, shapes, colors, as a musical interpretation.
“Some people choose a straight path, others follow indeterminate turns.” I belong to the second group. At the age of 16, I began my life as a worker in shifts in a factory… and also started painting. At the age of 17, I was adventurous here and there. At the age of 20, I did my first solo exhibition. After a few years, I quit painting because I was so desperate to explore other types of arts such as theater, music and cinema. All of them more or less bring me happiness… During that time, I had the opportunity to meet famous artists and learn a lot. Finally, I return to painting seriously. Since music is my passion, I always draw pictures with music. And now, I draw music.” – Artist Jacob Reymond shared.
The author and music researcher Jacques Amblard once observed: “When performing musical painting, Jacob is not merely an actor, a musician or an artist, but the sum of all three. He is really a child playing, a person rediscovering, a metaphysical game, beyond art. “
In the book Instant instinct that brings together 86 works of musical paintings by Jacob Reymond, writer Alain Blanc also wrote: Just watch the artist draw live in a musical visual performance, the musical paintings, we will see the music that the artist listens to will be smoothly drawn onto the fabric surface, and we “admire” music that is gradually unfolding on the tangible canvas. Each chapter, each paragraph of the piece is transmitted in the movement of the hand, wrist, in each body movement of the artist to create shapes and blocks on drawing paper. All works, therefore, are “musical pictures”, “musical paintings”.
In the exhibition in Hanoi, artist Jacob Reymond will perform a unique musical painting performance with talented French clarinet artist Vincent Thomas.
