Hanoi chess player Nguyen Hong Nhung won a Gold medal at the World Junior Speed Chess Championship

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic situation, the 2021 World Junior Speed Chess Championship will be held in an online format. The tournament, organized by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) and the Georgia Chess Association, officially ended on August 31. The Vietnamese team sent 35 players to participate, in which, there were 3 players in each age category.

Young chess player Nguyen Thi Hong Nhung won the gold medal at the U16 World Junior Speed Chess Championship.

In the content of the female U16 age category, the final is an internal match between two Vietnamese players, Nguyen Hong Nhung (Hanoi) and Vu Bui Thi Thanh Van (Ninh Binh). After 2 rounds, Hanoi player Hong Nhung beat her teammate with a 2-0 result to win the gold medal at the Championship.

With her winning, Nguyen Hong Nhung won the Cup from the International Chess Federation (FIDE) and won a place to attend the Super Final – the tournament gathering the 6 strongest players of all ages in December 2021. And Thanh Van finished second, but still received a certificate of merit and a place in the Super Final.

It is known that Nguyen Hong Nhung is only 15 years old, currently a 10th-grade math student at Hanoi – Amsterdam High School for the Gifted. In the last grade 10 entrance exam in Hanoi, the Hanoi female chess player passed three categories of Math, Literature and English at four different gifted high schools. And Vu Bui Thi Thanh Van is 16 years old, studying in grade 11 at Luong Van Tuy High School for the Gifted, Ninh Binh.

In addition to the gold medal of Nguyen Hong Nhung, another Hanoi player – Dau Khuong Duy (men’s U10 category) also brought the Vietnamese team another one. Before that, two representatives of Vietnam, Dau Khuong Duy (student of Nguyen Du Primary School, Ha Dong district, Hanoi) and Dinh Nho Kiet (student of Le Quy Don Secondary School, Cau Giay district, Hanoi) also participated in the match for third place on August 30.

After the match, Dau Khuong Duy won the third prize at the age of U10 male category, Dinh Nho Kiet received the Certificate of Merit for 4th place at the age of U12 male.

Thus, at the end of the World Junior Speed Chess Championship 2021, Vietnamese chess has 35 players participating and won 1 gold medal and 1 bronze gold.
