Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports, Architecture Magazine – Vietnam Association of Architects and UN-Habitat, on August 25, 2022 afternoon, at Meeting Room C1-C2 of Green One UN House, jointly held the launching ceremony of Hanoi Public Art Design Contest 2022. The ceremony was attended by Mr. Do Dinh Hong, Director of Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports; Mr. Hoang Thuc Hao, Vice Chairman of Vietnam Association of Architects; Ms. Pham Thanh Huong, Head of UNESCO Cultural Office in Vietnam; Mr. Jonghyo Nam- Acting Chief Representative of UN-Habitat in Vietnam; Mr. Hoang Quoc Viet, Head of Culture and Arts Department, Propaganda Department of the Hanoi’s Party Committee; representatives of Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, Hanoi University of Architecture, University of Industrial Fine Arts, Vietnam National University, etc.

This event takes place within the framework of the Creative Design Festival 2022 and is an activity to implement the Implementation Plan of Initiatives to join UNESCO Creative Cities Network by 2025. Its entire program is implemented under direction of Hanoi People’s Committee and Vietnam Association of Architects.

The contest aims to encourage young people, especially students, to discover historical and cultural values ​​in the Hanoi Old Quarter and propose ideas for designing public art spaces (including indoor and outdoor), in order to bring innovative design models and solutions that apply new technologies, provides educational and aesthetic value, contribute to make arts and artistic creation activities closer to the public. Young participants in the contest will be able to join activities such as seminars, workshops, training sessions, etc. to meet experts to help improve their idea for the contest as well as professional capacity.

In the opening speech, Mr. Do Dinh Hong, Member of the Hanoi Party’s Committee, Director of the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports, expressed his pleasure to welcome distinguished guests to the event. As said, public art design was an important aspect. Over the years, Hanoi always received the attention of UN-Habitat as well as universities and people of all classes with the desire to build a more and more beautiful Hanoi. This contest would help Hanoi to have more public art spaces, help its managers have more plans and ideas to replicate public spaces in Hanoi to make it experience positive changes and become more livable. He hoped the contest would receive a positive response from students and young people in design schools in the city.

Mr. Jonghyo Nam, Acting Chief Representative of UN-Habitat in Vietnam, affirmed that UN-Habitat is honored to accompany Hanoi and the delegates present at the launching ceremony of “Hanoi Public Art Design Contest 2022”. This contest was an activity within the framework of projects to mobilize cultural resources and youth participation for a creative Hanoi. Through this contest, UN- Habitat hoped to create a playground, create opportunities and empower young people, connect stakeholders including local authorities, private partners and the community to join the process of turning Hanoi into a Creative Capital of Southeast Asia.

Delegates carried out the launching ceremony of the Contest

The contest received the companionship of Hoan Kiem District People’s Committee and the professional coordination of Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, Hanoi University of Architecture, University of Industrial Fine Arts, Vietnam National University, and University of Science and Technology, etc.

Target participants in the contest are creative young people, mainly students of universities and colleges in architectural design, interior design, fine art, culture, etc., painters, architects, engineers, and designers, especially young ones, who are interested in the creative design of public art works.

There will be 01 First Prize (01 Breakthrough Idea Award); 02 Second Prizes (01 Best Innovative Application Idea Award, 01 Best Technology Innovation Idea Award); 02 Third Prizes (02 New Creative Ideas). The Organizing Committee will award 05 prizes worth from VND 15 million to 30 million for the best ideas. The contest announcement and award ceremony will be held at the opening ceremony of the Creative Design Festival 2022 (scheduled to be held on November 11, 2022).

The candidates will submit their papers by 16:00, October 12, 2022 both online and in person. The in-person submission will be at Office of Architecture Magazine – Vietnam Association of Architects, 40 Tang Bat Ho Street, Hai Ba Trung District, Hanoi. The online submission will be via email cuocthi@tckt.vn, whose subject will be “Submission for Hanoi Public Art Design Contest 2022”.

At this launching ceremony, the Organizing Committee introduced orientation of the Creative Design Festival 2022. This is the result of the great success of the Unleashing Creativity Week 2021, in order to implement the Implementation Plan of Initiatives to join UNESCO Creative Cities Network by 2025. The Festival will focus on Design & Technology, with a larger event scale and space than in 2021. It is expected that there will be nearly 30 activities and events taking place in different locations in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem pedestrian streets and some creative spaces in the city during the Week, November 11 – 18, 2022. Activities, including exhibitions, seminars as well as diverse cultural, artistic and entertainment events and activities are made of many creative, interactive, experiential, meaningful and educational elements for the public. The Creative Design Festival2022 is expected to attract 5-8 million hits on digital platforms; 150 artists, groups of artists, speakers, artisans, multi-disciplinary creatives to join.
