On July 29th 2022, The Standing Board of the District’s Fatherland Front Committee and the Representative Board of the Elderly Association of Phu Xuyen district coordinated to organize the discussion “Improving the quality of the progressive civilized mourning campaign”.
Attendees of the conference were Mr. Nguyen Van Cuong – Permanent Deputy Secretary of the District Party Committee, Mr. Bui Thi Ngoc Lan – Member of the Standing Committee, Chairman of the District’s Fatherland Front Committee, leaders of the Fatherland Front Committee, Representative Board of the Elderly Association and leaders of a number of the district’s functional departments, boards and agencies; the Chairman of the People’s Committee; Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Fatherland Front Committee; Chairmans of the Elderly Associations of communes and townlets.
After 10 years of implementation, the campaign of progressive civilized mourning of Phu Xuyen district has achieved numerous positive results: Most of the funerals in the area have been carried out solemnly, economically, affectionately and civilly in accordance with the local customs and traditions. Most funerals have been smoke-free and do not host guests. Outdated superstitions have been gradually eliminated. 100% of funerals haven’t lasted more than 24 hours, and haven’t turned on loudspeakers after 22pm…Phu Xuyen district currently has 147 cemeteries, of which 143 cemeteries have been planned, which is 97.2%; the construction of graves in the cemetery has been carried out strictly according to the New Rural Convention, reaching 75%. The rate of deceased cases being cremated is increasing, in 2021, the number of cremation cases reached 47.5% /total number of deaths, in the first 6 months of 2022, the rate has reached 53.4%.

The success in the implementation of the campaign of Progressive Civilized Mourning in Phu Xuyen district is due to the fact that over the years, the campaign has received the attention and direction of the Party committees, authorities, unions, and the support of the people. At the discussion, 7 opinions of representatives of communes and townlets were discussed, through which useful experiences had been shared, positive results also had been highlighted. However, there still were negative sides in organizing funerals such as many families still arrange banquets to invite guests, and outdated customs such as spreading joss papers, hiring weepers still have been practiced in some families and areas.
In order to contribute to the effective implementation of the civilized mourning campaign and increase the number of cremation cases, the attendee also proposed to the district committee to continue to support financially for cremation cases in the district. Speaking at the conference, Mr. Nguyen Van Cuong – Permanent Deputy Secretary of the District’s Party Committee had acknowledged and highly appreciated the results achieved over 10 years of implementation of the Progressive Civilized Mourning Campaign. He suggested that the Fatherland Front Committee and functional agencies of the district should accept the opinions and synthesize them to advice the direction of the implementation of the Campaign; at the same time, to promote propaganda to the people so that families and local areas would carry out the mourning in accordance with the State’s regulations and in accordance with local customs and traditions, which would help the implementation of the progressive civilized mourning campaign become more effective in the future.
