According to statistics from the General Department of Sports and Physical Training, in 2019, in terms of high-achievement sports, Vietnamese athletes won a total of 1,483 medals, including 587 gold medals, 428 silver medals and 468 bronze medals. Notably, at SEA Games 30, the Youth Union won 98 gold medals, 85 silver medals and 105 bronze medals, ranked 2nd in 11 countries attending the Congress. In this joint achievement, there are two precious gold medals of the men’s and women’s football teams, which won the championship at the SEA Games.

Vietnam Sports had a successful 30th SEA Games (2019)

Following the success, in 2020, the Vietnamese sports industry determined that there are key tasks that are to participate in the Tokyo Olympics, attend the Asian Beach Games, attend the World Cup by the men’s football team, participate in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament by U23 men’s team and women’s football team, prepare forces to attend the 31st SEA Games hosted by Vietnam. To do well this task, in 2020, the General Department of Sports and Physical Training will gather forces to participate in the Tokyo Olympics. The sports industry sets the goal for Vietnamese Sports to win a Gold Medal or at least have a medal at the Tokyo Olympics. In the immediate future, Vietnam sports must strive to have 20 athletes to win tickets of participation in this peak playground. Currently, there are only 4 Vietnamese athletes who meet the Olympic standards, named Nguyen Huy Hoang (Swimming), Le Thanh Tung (Gymnastics) and 2 archers named Nguyen Hoang Phi Vu and Do Thi Anh Nguyet. Thus, in the remaining 6 months before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, getting 16 more seats the Olympics is not an easy task for the teams of Vietnamese sports. To gain more seats at the Olympics, the departments and teams must make efforts in the journey to win tickets to Tokyo by attending the point competitions.

Vietnam Archery won 2 places for the 2020 Olympic Games.

Along with that, the sports teams of Vietnam are also actively preparing to attend the Asian Beach Games, the men’s soccer team attending the World Cup, the U23 men’s and the women’s football teams participate in Olympic qualifiers, prepare forces to participate the SEA Games 31 organized in Vietnam. Also in 2020, the sports industry will deploy the organization and preparation of athletes to attend the SEA Games 31 and Para Games 2021 in Vietnam. To perform well the tasks assigned in the Prime Minister’s Decision 1616/QD-TTg, the first thing that the sports industry needs to do immediately is to set up the Steering Committee and Organizing Committee for SEA Games 31 and Para Games 11 to coordinate and direct all the preparations for this event, which takes place urgently and thoughtfully. Subsequently, sub-committees for SEA Games 31 and Para Games 11 should be established. Specifically, the professional, financial, information and communication, information technology and other functional units will take responsibility for the tasks assigned by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the General Department of Physical Training and Sports when the establishment decisions are issued. Since then, they will help the operation in the stages of preparation for SEA Games 31 and Para Games 11 from the central level to the host unit of Hanoi to go smoothly and effective coordination.

Following the direction and request of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism was assigned to submit to the Prime Minister for the decision on the establishment of a Steering Committee headed by a Deputy Prime Minister. The Steering Committee has the authority to decide on the establishment of the Central Organizing Committee headed by the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism to run the activities (the Organizing Committee); direct the concerned ministries, branches and localities and the Organizing Committee to strictly implement the provisions of the Southeast Asian Games Confederation, the Southeast Asian Disability Games Federation and the Vietnamese laws.
