The textbook “Educating elegant and civilized lifestyle for students in Hanoi” has been officially introduced since 2012. Most of the schools in Hanoi consider this a formal document for students’ personality orientation and moral and lifestyle changes. “It is clear that the material has helped students behave better. They are more active in work and school clean-up, become more attached to each other, love each other, chat politely and together practice moral aspects through the lessons. Recently, student Nguyen Khanh Linh won the third prize in the contest “Writing about elegant and civilized lifestyle” at the city level. Excellent teachers such as Nguyen Thi Minh Hoa and Nguyen Thu Trang were also honored in the awards of the city in the integration of the theme “Educating elegant and civilized lifestyle for students in Hanoi” in subjects”, said Nguyen Thu Trang.
Many schools have applied various new, concrete, and practical ways to make students excited when entering these lessons. Ms. Thu Ha at Gia Thuy Secondary School (Long Bien) is a typical example. She cleverly instructed students to sing the song “Hanoi with 12 flower seasons” by musician Giang Son to make children love Hanoi. Also in the class, she utilized movies about Hanoi such as: “Hanoi Baby”, “Hanoians”, etc. Especially, students of Gia Thuy Secondary School played roles in the feuilleton performances with integrated contents of civilized and elegant behaviors for each student to learn and follow.
Treating the disease called “learning without following”
There is no denying the success of the textbook “Educating elegant and civilized lifestyle for students in Hanoi” through obvious changes in attitude and behaviors of students in the capital. However, it cannot fail to mention the limitations that result in the poor quality of classes, students’ low acquisition of lessons and learning without following.
According to Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan from Cau Giay District Office of Education and Training, there is too long knowledge in the document “Educating elegant and civilized lifestyle for students in Hanoi”. The stories therein are not vivid, universal and typical. For example, the lesson on communicating with the teacher is set in a swimming pool while very few or no actual situation exists. In addition, some new issues such as telephone communication, behaviours in bus, public places or on social networking sites are not updated in the document.
Furthermore, at the conference on assessment of progress of teaching “Educating elegant and civilized lifestyle for students in Hanoi” 2012 – 2013 period to 2017 – 2018 period recently taking place in Hanoi, most of the delegates and teachers presented problems that exist in teaching. Specifically, there are some contents that are mentioned in one set such as the lesson on attention to workers, which was supposed to cause student to think of mental labor only.
According to Ms. Pham Thi Hai Van, Vice Principal of Gia Thuy Secondary School (Long Bien), most teachers deliver lessons by experience and are not subject to regular training. Also, because the time for this class is integrated into other classes, it does not last in 45 minutes.
The purpose of integrating the document “Educating elegant and civilized lifestyle for students in Hanoi” into the curriculum is embody most of the teachers as the good models for students and to have a young and sensitive generation who deeply love Hanoi culture. Educating the elegant and civilized lifestyle for students will have a long way to go and needs to be adjusted to make residents in Hanoi more love Hanoi.
