The 9th National Sports Festival 2022 is one of the important goals of Vietnam’s sports industry. It isn’t just about competing, checking achievements, preparing for important playing fields; preserving and promoting national sports, but also creating a strong impact and spread, contributing to the development of both the economy and the spiritual life of the people.

In 2018, Hanoi successfully organized the 8th National Sports Festival.

As planned, Quang Ninh will be the host for the 9th National Sports Festival in November 2022 with about 40 sports, including Olympic, ASIAD, SEA Games and sports groups and national sports. Olympic group (22 subjects): athletics, swimming, gymnastics, rowing, football, shooting, archery, weightlifting, judo, taekwondo, wrestling, boxing, swords, badminton, tennis, volleyball, ball throwing, basketball, bicycle, table tennis, golf, karate.

ASIAD group (7 subjects): wushu, pencak silat, chess, sepak takraw, billiard & snooker, dance sports, bowling. SEA Games group (3 subjects): bodybuilding, muay, billiards.

The group of ethnic sports has developed strongly in many localities and has been promoted internationally (7 subjects): Vovinam, traditional martial arts, ethnic wrestling, shuttlecock, diving, chess, lion dance. Recreational sports group (1 subject): paragliding.

Along with that, the Festival is also expected to have the participation of 65 delegations (including 63 provinces, cities and 2 branches: Public Security and Army); the number of officials, coaches and athletes is about 8,000 people; referees about 1,600 people.

At the meeting on the 2022 National Sports Festival, on October 5, Mr. Tran Duc Phan – Deputy Director-General in charge of the General Department of Sports said that it is necessary to specifically review the content in some subjects, boldly cut out or add necessary subjects/contents to match the development and integration roadmap of the country’s sports.

For ethnic sports such as: Tug of war, Crossbow Shooting, Stick Pushing, E-sports, etc., it is also necessary to consider whether to include it as an official competition or to apply a social organization to achieve dual goals – both promoting the movement, promoting that sport, and reducing the organizational budget load for the central and local governments.

In 2018, the 8th National Sports Festival was held in Hanoi capital with 36 subjects and 747 contents and lasted for 26 days (from November 15 to December 10). At the end of the Festival, the host team Hanoi excellently led the medal table with 176 Gold medals, 149 Silver medals and 139 Bronze medals. Ho Chi Minh City delegation ranked second with 118 Gold medals, 101 Silver medals and 103 Bronze medals. The Military Delegation finished in 3rd place with 59 Gold Medals, 61 Silver Medals and 86 Bronze Medals.

Hanoi defended first place for the whole delegation of the 2018 National Sports Festival.

Notably, in many subjects, Hanoi not only led the group but also far exceeded the set targets, typically in the following subjects: Wushu (21 gold medals, 11 silver medals, 3 bronze medals); wrestling (14 gold medals, 3 silver medals, 6 bronze medals); weightlifting (14 gold medals, 7 silver medals, 5 bronze medals); athletics (9 gold medals, 10 silver medals, 7 bronze medals); rowing boat racing (9 gold medals, 2 bronze medals); diving (7 gold medals, 6 silver medals, 1 bronze medal), etc.

At the 8th National Sports Festival, with the responsibility of hosting the Games, Hanoi has made a comprehensive and methodical investment in both competition facilities and professional forces. This is a National Sports Festival that is considered quite successful when most of the competitions go smoothly. Its organization is also considered as thoughtful and economical. Taking advantage of the existing infrastructure system of Hanoi capital helps the sports industry and the state budget save a considerable amount of money in the construction of new competition works. In addition, this is also the congress where the “reputation” of cheating in competition, the status of “buying and selling” of medals and chasing the virtual achievements of local sports teams is minimized. Not only successfully organized the congress, but Hanoi also defended first place for the whole delegation.
